My ISA detention is without any legal or moral basis. It is a clear abuse of detention without trial

Press Statement by Teresa Kok in Petaling Jaya on 19th September 08

I have been released after being detained in solitary confinement in a 6 by 8 holding cell for seven days under the Internal Security Act (ISA). I was informed by the police that they detained me under Sec 73(1) of Internal Security Act 1960, which means I have incited racial and religious tension and conflict.

After being detained for seven days under the guise of so-called investigations, the police failed to produce any evidence or proof of me being involved in the activities of causing racial and religious tension. They were only able to ask me few questions based entirely on the false and malicious article written by Zaini Hassan under the topic “Azan, jawi, JAIS, Uitm dan ba-alif-ba-ya” that was published in Utusan Malaysia on 10th September 2008.

Time to repeal ISA law once and for all…

Press statement by Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran
Sept 16, 2008

We are totally against the use of the ISA by the UMNO led Barisan Nasional government to arrest critics, curb press freedom and violate the fundamental rights of citizens.

The BN is again using the brute force of the ISA to assault those brave and courageous Malaysians who speak out in the name of truth and integrity about the abuses of power, corruption and racism perpetuated by the ruling clique.

We reiterate our total opposition to the use of the ISA – the unjustified and illegal detention use of force – against prominent Raja Petra Kamaruddin, the owner of the Malaysia Today website, Seputeh MP and Senior Selangor State Executive Committee Member YB Teresa Kok and Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng.

IFJ Demands Unconditional Release for RPK

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) fears a growing
clampdown against the media is under way in Malaysia, with two
journalists arrested on September 12 under the Internal Security Act
(ISA).

Raja Petra Kamarudin, a blogger and editor of the political website
Malaysia Today, is being held without charge under the ISA. He has run
the popular alternative political website for two years, and has
broken a string of controversial stories on the site.

His office was reportedly raided by police about 10 days ago,
according to local media reports, and equipment and papers were
confiscated. Access to the Malaysia Today site was reportedly blocked
for a week on government orders.

云清与素沁被扣留的那一夜…

statement by Sdri Chong Eng as Wanita DAP chief, 17th September 2008

BN Government Misuse of Legal Power – Release All ISA Detainees Immediately

statement by Sdri Chong Eng as Wanita DAP chief, 13th September 2008

The high handed arrest of 3 innocent citizens of Malaysia including a parliamentarian and State Exco Member YB Teresa Kok (PR-DAP Seputeh) and their UNJUST detention under ISA is a mockery to the rule of law and democratic principles in our Country.

Wanita DAP condemns this act of the Barisan Nasional Government led by Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for the misusing of legal power to deal with the public press and opposition politicians.

The arrest of YB Teresa Kok, our beloved Comrade and National Organizing Secretary, is tantamount to denying the Rakyat their democratic rights and gagging the voice of the Rakyat because YB Teresa is their elected representative in both the august Parliament and the Selangor State Assembly.

Meeting with Speaker Pandikar Amin tomorrow on MP Teresa Kok’s ISA detention on totally baseless grounds

by Sdr Lim Kit Siang, 14th September 2008 at 12 noon

I will meet the Speaker, Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia in Parliament tomorrow over the detention of DAP MP for Seputeh Teresa Kok under the Internal Security Act (ISA) and the actions which should be taken by Parliament over an MP’s arrest on totally baseless and non-existent grounds.

Home Minister, Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said yesterday that Teresa was detained under the ISA as she had questioned the sensitive issues such as the azan (call for prayers for Muslims) and that could cause ill-will and disharmony.

This allegation was first made by the former Selangor Mentri Besar, Datuk Seri Dr. Mohamad Khir Toyo, which was then sensationalised by Utusan Malaysia.

Teresa had made an immediate denial that she had tried to disallow azan in Kota Damansara Sri Serdang and Puchong Jaya. The mosque committees in both areas have endorsed Teresa’s denial with the Masjid Kota Damansara officials explaining that a damaged ampliflier had resulted in the calls to prayer to be made without the aid of a PA system while Masjid Kinrara mosque committee said Teresa had never set foot in Masjid Kinrara and was not involved in the azan petition issue in the area.

Dilemma!

by Sdr Loke Siew Fook, MP for Rasah, Adun for Lobak

Today is the 15th day of the 8th lunar month in the Chinese calendar. It is the Mid-Autumn Festival or Mooncake Festival. It is the second most important festival for the Chinese community. I attended a religious event in a Buddhist Temple in Temiang this morning. In my brief speech, i said i don’t have any festive mood today over what had happened in the last 48 hours. And especially one of my comrade Sdri Teresa Kok lost her freedom temporarily. Worst still, she can’t even have mooncake with her aged parents tonight! Can you imagine how her parents feel?

Many people asked; why Teresa Kok? Teresa is a well-liked politician not only among DAP fraternity but also among BN and UMNO politicians. You can always see her talking and discussing matters with BN Ministers in the Parliament lounge. Can someone like her be a threat to national security?
